Your Reddit Reputation is Your AI Reputation

The way consumers discover, evaluate and choose brands has evolved. Instead of searching and clicking through links, they’re asking questions and expect direct answers. According to R/GA's forthcoming [Agentic Commerce report](https://www.rga.com/news/designing-brands-win-agentic-commerce), 64% of consumers have used AI to research a product or service in the past three months. That shift is driving brands to ask how they can show up in AI responses, and how they can influence what gets said about them. While some are pursuing through means like B2A content development and AEO, others are taking shortcuts, like seeding Reddit to manipulate AI answers.

AI systems are becoming the primary intermediary between consumer intent and brand consideration, and how they form answers matters. LLMs don’t pull from a single source. They weigh content across owned sites, editorial coverage, reviews, forums, social and more, with recency playing a significant role. A fresh Reddit thread can move the needle on an AI answer within hours. Brands and agencies advising them have noticed.

Across industries, 77% of what shapes a brand’s AI narrative comes from off-site sources (Source: Athena reports May ‘26) - those the brand doesn’t own or control. R/GA research found Reddit ranks as a top cited source across many categories (Source: [Peec.ai](https://peec.ai/) March ‘26) - this means conversations happening on Reddit aren’t just community activity, but they’re actively shaping how AI systems understand and represent brands.

That reality is raising a new question for marketers. We already know AI agents have become  the new intermediary in the customer journey. But with brands increasingly focused on how to market to them, what is the role of Reddit and other community platforms when the audience includes both humans and machines summarizing human opinion? Some brands are pursuing visibility through coordinated subreddit seeding and manufactured signals designed to exploit how LLMs weight recent content. Reddit is responding: the platform now uses AI to detect and remove inauthentic content at scale, and has already reduced spam exposure by 20% in early 2026 (Source: [Reddit](https://redditinc.com/news/how-were-keeping-reddit-real-and-safe-in-the-ai-era)). The signal brands are trying to game is one Reddit is actively working to protect.

Reddit skews younger and is one of the most AI-skeptical communities on the internet. Inauthentic content, AI-generated posts and anything that feels like exploitation gets called out quickly and publicly because Reddit’s core mechanic is community voting. Every post and comment is publicly ranked by the people reading it, which means that coordinated or unnatural sounding content is surfaced, scrutinized and down voted. It’s also one of the last places on the internet where people disagree in detail. That friction is part of why AI systems weigh it so heavily - disagreement is harder to fake than consensus and LLMs are increasingly sophisticated at recognizing the difference. 

Brands that feel like bad actors in the ecosystem get treated as such. The community notices and therefore the AI systems notice. That means Reddit demands a different kind of participation. One that is additive to the community, not one just optimized for AI visibility. The good news is that those two objectives aren’t in conflict. What earns trust with a reddit community is largely what earns citation from an LLM.


Reddit requires a different strategy

Additionally, LLM favorability isn’t fixed. Just this week, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations dropped from 3.8% to .05% after Open AI changed how ChatGPT searches the web. A source that dominated AI answers one week can become peripheral the next. The brands that built their visibility on manufactured Reddit signals essentially disappeared overnight. The brands with genuine community presence and credible off-site footprints across multiple sources are the ones that survive a shift in how a platform is indexed or weighted by AI systems. No single source is guaranteed, which is exactly why integrity across all of them matters.

The application for brands

CeraVe is a strong example of what lasting AI visibility looks like in practice. In the derma category, they consistently rank well for AI citation. Their product pages are built for machine retrieval: structured Q&A, credentialed experts, dated clinical backing, and ingredient-level detail that only the brand can authoritatively publish.

Off-site, the #cerave hashtag has generated over 24,000 videos across 13,000 YouTube channels, and their Reddit and forum presence reflects actual consumer opinions, not what the brand wants people to think.

Arc’teryx is another good example. Their product pages consistently map to the kind of problem-oriented language people actually search for, like cold-weather, wind protection, and waterproof, which makes it straightforward for AI to source from. Each product page combines technical specs, verbatim customer FAQs with detailed responses, UGC, and transparent reviews. That’s the kind of factual, structured content agents can receive cleanly and trust. 

Off site, they benefit from a strong earned editorial system. OutdoorGearLab, Wirecutter, GearJunkie, and REI regularly feature the brand through gear-lab testing and detailed reviews, building third party credibility that LLMs weigh heavily. 


What good looks like

For brands looking to leverage Reddit to improve how they show up on LLMs, the starting point is broader diagnosis. Before making any Reddit moves, understand where the brand currently shows up in AI responses generally, what sources are being cited, and what sentiment those sources carry. That picture often looks different from what brands expect. 

Reddit is not one audience, and jumping in without understanding the community first is where brands get into trouble. Each subreddit has its own norms, vocabulary, and tolerance for brand presence. The brands that do this well spend time listening before they post anything. That listening phase tells you where there's a genuine role for the brand and where there isn't.

The most important distinction to make is between AEO and what actively works against it. Structured owned content, earned editorial, and authentic community participation build AI visibility in ways that compound over time. Manufactured signals borrow against future trust and degrade the platform in the process.

Ultimately, Reddit needs to be treated as a long-term channel strategy, rather than a one-off campaign. Real presence is built through consistent, authentic participation, which means a different budget conversation and a different definition of success. The right questions to ask include: where does Reddit fit in the broader communications plan, what role does it play at each stage of the consumer journey for both human and agent audiences, and what does brand participation actually look like in the communities that matter?
