Daily active users of large language models and AI intermediaries are rising rapidly, and agentic capabilities are embedding themselves into the experience infrastructure people use every day. From search and productivity tools to commerce and customer service, intelligence is becoming the layer through which many interactions now happen.

What is most revealing is how people are using these systems. Early narratives framed generative AI as a productivity tool for coding or writing. But research highlighted in Harvard Business Review shows that the leading use cases have already shifted toward far more personal needs, including therapy and companionship, organizing one’s life, and exploring purpose and personal growth.

This signals something deeper than adoption. AI is quickly becoming a life interface, not just a tool.

Consumers increasingly turn to AI systems to navigate everyday decisions, from planning schedules and learning new topics to comparing products and seeking health advice. Millions now use conversational AI for health-related questions each day.

In a study R/GA commissioned last year, we found that over half of consumers would trust personal gift recommendations from an AI assistant over those from friends and family, the people you would assume know them best.

Taken together, these signals point to a profound shift. AI systems are becoming the interface through which people augment their lives, relationships, and ultimately the brands they choose.

An Experience Expectation Reset

As AI becomes embedded in the tools and environments people use every day, expectations move with it. When intelligence becomes ambient, what once felt advanced quickly becomes the baseline.

We have seen this pattern before. When ride-sharing introduced real-time coordination, transparent pricing, and automatic payment, the experience of hailing a taxi suddenly felt unnecessarily complicated. The underlying service had not changed. The expectation had.

A similar reset is now unfolding across digital experiences.

Increasingly, what once required navigating multiple sites, comparing options, and piecing together information can now be resolved through a single prompt. AI systems synthesize inputs from across the internet and deliver recommendations or summaries in moments. 

Research suggests that nearly half of U.S. consumers already use AI-powered assistants or search tools when evaluating purchases, signaling how quickly these systems are becoming a primary layer through which choices are made.

As a result, personalization is no longer seen as a differentiator, it is becoming the price of entry. McKinsey reports that 71 percent of consumers expect companies to deliver personalized interactions, and 76 percent become frustrated when those expectations are not met.

People increasingly expect systems to understand context, remember prior interactions, and anticipate what they need next. When an experience fails to recognize intent or reduce effort, it does not feel neutral. It feels behind.

At the same time, the same systems that help brands generate content are helping people filter it. Assistants summarize information, prioritize results, and often resolve questions before someone ever visits a website.

Android has always stood for openness, inclusivity, and innovation. To demonstrate those values, we created a generative experience that turned Android’s iconic mascot into an infinite canvas for self-expression.

Using Google’s latest AI technologies, people could generate their own Android bot from a selfie or a prompt. Users could customize hair, clothing, expression, and attitude while the result remained unmistakably Android. No one reviewed each creation. The brand’s structure defined what was possible.

Strategy, principles, and voice became structured knowledge guiding every interaction in real time.

This is where branding is heading more broadly. The brand becomes less about guidance that humans enforce after the fact and more about intelligence built into the systems that generate experiences, stories, and decisions. 

Once that intelligence exists, organizations can begin to build tools that apply it consistently across teams. Designing experiences that behave this way also depends on something deeper. We saw this principle come to life in our work with G42, one of the world’s most advanced AI infrastructure and cloud computing companies. Rather than building a conventional website organized around navigation and page hierarchies, we structured the organization’s knowledge so it could be accessed conversationally. The system draws from the right materials in real time, based on who is visiting and what they need at that moment. The experience, which is currently live in Beta, does not simply direct someone to information. It synthesizes an answer and adapts as the conversation evolves.
Navigation apps offer a useful analogy. They no longer provide a single route and leave you to interpret the rest. They continuously recalculate as conditions change. Brand experiences are beginning to operate in a similar way, less like fixed maps everyone follows and more like systems that read the situation and respond.

For organizations, this requires designing a new layer of adaptive interface elements. Conversational entry points that allow people to ask directly for what they need. Dynamic content systems that adjust based on context. Structured knowledge that allows systems to synthesize answers rather than simply retrieve pages. These capabilities allow brands to respond with relevance in real time while ensuring intelligent systems can accurately represent them in discovery.

When someone abandons a cart, the system does not send a generic reminder. It generates a personalized narrative that reflects the brand’s unique perspective and voice, while respecting regulatory and safety requirements. 

The difference was simple: people felt understood rather than retargeted. And when attention is scarce, that distinction matters.

Jazz offers a useful analogy. Improvisation can sound completely free, but it is grounded in structure. Musicians draw from learned patterns, stay faithful to the composition, and adapt to what is happening in the moment.

Generative storytelling works in a similar way when it is designed well. Content remains rooted in brand knowledge and principles while responding to the situation in front of it. The outputs may vary, but the voice and perspective remain recognizable.

This capability depends on the foundations established in the earlier pillars. Without intelligent brands that provide clear principles and voice, generative storytelling quickly becomes generic. Without adaptive experiences that understand context, it becomes noise rather than value. When these elements work together, storytelling becomes a responsive layer within the experience rather than a static asset delivered from the outside.

The stakes are not simply about producing more. The same AI systems that allow brands to generate content at scale are also helping people filter what they see.
