Our Brand Design and Consulting team (BD&C) combines business, branding, and innovation to build brands for a more human future. Verbal Design, a unique discipline that bridges strategy and creative, is dedicated to defining how a brand uses languages everywhere. Along with Visual, Experience, and Strategy, it’s fundamental to our approach to brand design, our philosophy about what makes a brand great today,, and our team as BD&C. 

As a Verbal Design Directoryou’ll be a lead and craft expert on all things Verbal, from brand voice development to naming.But your work won’t be siloed; your role as a Design Director on BD&C means you’ll partner with Strategists and Visual Designers to concept and designbrands from the ground up, transform existing brands, and build  inspirational, useful, and dynamic design system.  You’ll work closely with the BD&C team leads, be a project and craft guide to more junior members of the the team, and collaborate with talent from a range of disciplines across RGA. 

Here’s what you should know if you want to be a Verbal DesignDesigner at R/GA:

On any given day you might

  • Create  strategic and creative points of view on Brand Character, Brand Voice, and Copy Themes
  • Lead the development of  compelling copy, and create actionable guidance for other writers to write on brand
  • Define naming strategies, drive name generation, and solve challenges around naming systems and architecture 
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines on sharpening ideas and enhancing a range of  BD&C deliverables 
  • Be a client-facing lead as well as steward of Brand Design and Consulting to internal teams, including executives 
  • Co-lead holistic development of brand identities, and unlock creative and strategic opportunities  for  including how a brand acts, how a brand looks, and how a brand comes to life throughout an experience 
  • Partner with brand strategists to find, shape, and express the fundamentals of brand strategy, like brand purpose 
  • Contribute to the evolution of the Verbal Design discipline at R/GA and its profile in the industry 

The Ideal Person

  • 6+ years experience in brand, writing, or relevant industry with proven ability to think systematically about a brand’s expression 
  • Has excellent strategic and creative writing skills
  • Has experience and expertise in brand naming and naming strategy development 
  • Can define and express tactical choices behind creative work 
  • Has experience guiding junior talent 
  • Is equally inspired by the big picture and the details and is not afraid to get into the weeds 
  • Is open to contributing to a variety of endeavors, even outside of how a brand uses language
  • Is a self-starter who is proactive and  comfortable working with the ambiguity of transformational work 
  • Is curious and open to learning and trying new things 
  • Is not only open to but energized by applying the power of language—and stepping into the role of creative strategist/strategic creative overall, beyond the medium of language Is a generous and enthusiastic collaborator
  • Has a desire to contribute to world-changing ideas and work 

Bonus points

  • Knowledge of multiple languages, semiotics, linguistics, or coding 
  • Experience with UX or product and service 
  • Interest in or experience with other crafts/artforms
